Joe Pye flowers attract many types of butterflies, hummingbirds, and bees. Honey made from bees that forage from this plant is fruity, with a nice orange or amber color. Joe Pye has attractive large whorled foliage, 8-12 inches in length and serrated and pointed. It has hollow green stems with purple nodes. There are 5-7 small flowers per head with 5-9 heads on each 12-18 inch compound inflorescence. This is a very large bloom and the plants height can make it the king of the garden. Joe Pye Weed is easily grown in medium moisture soils. In the garden setting it is recommended to cut Joe Pye to the ground before winter. If you like the plant you see here but have only shade Sweet Joe Pye Weed, a native to Minnesota is very similar (Eupatorium purpureum). It is very similar to Joe Pye in height, flower shape and color, but likes savanna and woodland conditions. Either plant can be purchased at Prairie Moon Nursery as seed, bare root, or potted plant.
